For more than 60 years, Princess Kaiulani Fashions has been creating Hawaiian garments that have become part of some of life’s most meaningful moments.
For many students, a graduation dress may seem like something worn for just one special day. But behind each dress is a much longer story—a story of Hawaiian culture, craftsmanship, the people who make it, and generations of women who have worn these dresses before you.
We hope that before you put on your graduation dress, you will take a moment to learn a little about the story it carries.

私たちが作っているのは、単なる「卒業式のためのドレス」ではありません。
この一着を通して、ハワイの文化、ものづくりの歴史、作り手の想い、そしてこれまでこのドレスを着てきた女性たちの記憶を、次の世代へつないでいきたいと考えています。
Why We Continue
Princess Kaiulani Fashions has been passed down through generations, and today the brand is under its third ownership.
When I first saw videos of Iolani students wearing their graduation dresses, standing together and dancing on stage, I was deeply moved. It reminded me that these dresses were not simply garments. They had become part of a tradition and part of an important moment in the lives of young people growing up in Hawaii.
That was one of the reasons I chose to continue Princess Kaiulani Fashions.
Keeping this tradition alive, however, has not always been easy. Local garment manufacturing has changed dramatically, and fewer people today have the skills required to make these dresses.
There have been times when I seriously questioned whether we could continue making graduation dresses at all.
But each year, we are reminded of why they matter.
Why We Continue
Princess Kaiulani Fashionsは、ハワイで生まれ、60年以上続いてきたブランドです。
現在のオーナーは3代目になります。
ブランドを引き継ぐきっかけのひとつとなったのが、ʻIolaniの卒業式の映像でした。
卒業生たちがハワイアン・ドレスを身にまとい、大勢でフラを踊る姿。
その光景を見たとき、「この文化をなくしてはいけない」と強く感じました。
ハワイで服を作り続けることは、決して簡単ではありません。
それでも私たちがこの卒業ドレスを作り続ける理由は、そこに単なるビジネス以上の意味があると信じているからです。
A Dress Becomes Part of a Life
During the years I have worked with Princess Kaiulani Fashions, I have heard many stories that changed the way I think about clothing.
Families have asked us to create a Princess Kaiulani dress for a beloved mother or grandmother to wear at the end of her life because it was the dress she loved most.
Former students have returned years after graduation asking us to alter their graduation dresses so they could wear them again at their weddings or rehearsal dinners.
Others have worn their graduation dresses again while performing hula at their weddings.
These experiences taught me something important:
We are not simply making dresses. We are making something that can become part of a person’s memories and milestones.

Behind this process are people—many of whom have spent decades developing their sewing skills and helping preserve Hawaiian garment making.
Their work is rarely seen when the finished dress appears on graduation day.

What Happens After Graduation?
Sometimes, after graduation season, we see graduation dresses in thrift stores or hear from vintage shops that students have brought them in.
There is nothing wrong with passing a dress on. In fact, allowing another person to wear it can give the garment another life.
But we hope that when you eventually decide what to do with your dress, you remember where it came from.
Keep it.
Wear it again.
Alter it.
Pass it to someone else.
Whatever you choose, we hope you pass it on with an understanding that it carries a small piece of Hawaiian culture, craftsmanship, and history with it.
